Description

The Diana class, also referred to as the Minor Standard Craft Mk II, is a series of six patrol boats operating within the Royal Danish Navy. The origins of these ships can be traced back to their construction by Faaborg Værft A/S, and the need to replace the outdated Barsø class of patrol boats. The lead ship of the class, HDMS Diana, entered service in 2007.

The design of Diana class vessels includes construction from robust glass-reinforced plastic. They are equipped with two MTU 16V396 TB94 diesel engines controlling two shafts with controllable pitch propellers, outputting 2,100 kilowatts or 2,816 bhp. This machinery allows the vessels to achieve a maximum speed of 18 knots. Additionally, the patrol vessels are each equipped with two 12.7-millimeter machine guns, providing them with a level of armament for combat operations. Each vessel possesses a crew capacity of 9, with additional accommodation for a total of 15 individuals. Furthermore, the Diana-class patrol vessels each have adequate space for a StanFlex container, enabling quick mission re-configurations.

The operational history of Diana class vessels began with tasks aimed at fisheries protection, patrol, and search and rescue. However, their role later expanded to encompass international and combat operations. The six vessels of the Diana class remain in service with the Royal Danish Navy’s 2nd Squadron, which is specifically tasked with carrying out international and combat operations. The Diana class patrol boats serve exclusively in Denmark.
