Description

The PSMM Mk5, or Patrol Ship Multi-Mission, is a class of multi-purpose patrol boat gunboats that were built for the United States Navy, inspired by the Asheville-class gunboat design. This small military ship has served various navies worldwide, including South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Designed for versatility and operational flexibility, the PSMM Mk5 utilizes a Combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system. This includes twin GM 12V149 Diesels for sustained operations and cruising, with a Lycoming TF-40A gas turbine that enables the vessel to reach higher speeds when required, providing a balance between endurance and rapid response.

Although specifics on armament can vary, the PSMM Mk5 generally includes a formidable set of weapons. For instance, the Republic of Indonesia Navy's Mandau-class missile FAC, a variant made in South Korea, is armed with Exocet MM-38 missiles, a dual-purpose 57mm gun, a Bofors 40mm cannon, and two Rheinmetall 20mm cannons. It also features advanced radar and fire control systems for tracking and engaging targets, as well as electronic warfare equipment for countermeasures and interception.

In operational history, several ships were delivered to the Republic of Korea Navy from March 1975 to February 1976, with further units built in South Korea. The Republic of China Navy received their ships, including one built in Taiwan, from May 1978 onwards. Indonesia's navy utilized versions made in South Korea, outfitted with sophisticated missile systems and electronics. Finally, the Kingdom of Thailand Navy had their Sattahip class built in Thailand, with a somewhat different armament profile, including a variety of cannons and machine guns to support their operators' diverse mission requirements.
