Description

The PR-72P class corvettes are a fleet of French-designed naval ships serving in the Peruvian Navy. Designed and initiated by the Société Française de Construction Navale (SFCN), the order for six units was placed in 1976. The production of the vessels was shared between the SFCN’s Villeneuve-la-Garenne shipyard, where the first three were built, and the remaining three at the Lorient Naval Dockyard. The corvettes underwent a change in their pennant numbers from the original P-101 to P-106, to CM-21 to CM-26, adopting the prefix CM, which denotes "corbeta misilera," or "guided missile corvette" in Spanish.

These ships are primarily designed for various naval tasks, including maritime surveillance, surface warfare, and the protection of Peruvian maritime interests. They embody a compact yet effective design suited for their multirole mission profile. To enhance their operational capabilities, an upgrade program commenced in 1998, involving the signing of a contract with MTU to re-engine three of the PR-72P-class corvettes. The expectation was set to eventually re-engine the entire class similarly.
