Description

The Georges Leygues class, also known as Type C70 AS or Type F70 AS, formed a series of anti-submarine destroyers serving the French Navy. Developed with multifaceted capabilities, these ships carried both Exocet and Crotale missiles, enabling them to engage in a variety of missions which included defending strategic positions, demonstrating naval force, and providing high seas escort.

Originally, the class was designated as a "corvette" under the C70 classification but was later recognized internationally as "anti-submarine destroyers", leading to the inclusion of a "D" in their hull numbers. The French Navy eventually referred to these vessels as "frigates" with the F70 classification.

The ships were designed with nuclear resistance in mind; their superstructures optimized to withstand nuclear blast pressures. Improvements were made on the latter half of the class, with the bridge being raised one deck higher to address issues encountered by the earlier ships in rough weather conditions. These latter frigates were also outfitted with advanced technology, such as the DSBV 61 passive linear towed array sonar, enhancing their operational capabilities and systems.

In terms of armament, the Georges Leygues class was equipped with an array of weapons that supported their anti-submarine role and extended their range of engagement to surface and air threats. The combination of Exocet missiles, designed for precise ship-to-ship engagement, and Crotale missiles, effective against aerial targets including aircraft and incoming missiles, made these frigates versatile combatants in a wide range of maritime warfare scenarios.

The class found its place in various operational theaters reflecting their intended use. They participated in defense missions, power projection, and sea escort duties. Over their years of service, these frigates contributed to the French Navy's operational scope by delivering a robust platform for sea control and maritime security.

In terms of operational history and decommissioning, various vessels of the Georges Leygues class have been retired from active duty. These include flagship Georges Leygues and frigates like Montcalm and Latouche-Tréville. The retirements mark the end of an era for this particular class of frigate in the French Navy, as each ship concludes its service and the navy transitions to newer vessels.
