Description
The Durjoy class is a series of large patrol crafts utilized by the Bangladesh Navy, specifically designed for extended patrolling and surveillance duties in Bangladesh's extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal. These vessels also have a capacity for limited offensive operations. As of 2021, there are four Durjoy-class ships serving in the Bangladesh Navy.
The class comprises two variants: the anti-surface warfare variant and the anti-submarine warfare variant. Although the primary characteristics of both variants are similar, they differ in their armament and sensor suites. The first Durjoy-class ships were produced following a 2009 contract for two anti-surface warfare variant ships with Wuchang Shipyard in China. Launched in 2012, BNS Durjoy (P 811) and BNS Nirmul (P 813) arrived in Bangladesh in early 2013 and were commissioned in August of the same year. The next two vessels, created in Bangladesh under transfer of technology (ToT) from China, were constructed by Khulna Shipyard and commissioned in November 2017. These later ships were the anti-submarine warfare variant.
Designed to withstand heavy sea states, the ships have a bulbous bow and are propelled by SEMT Pielstick 12PA6 diesel engines. The anti-surface warfare variant can reach top speeds of 28 knots with a range of 2,500 nautical miles, while the anti-submarine variant has a top speed of 25 knots with a range of 2,000 nautical miles. The ships can sustain missions for up to 15 days, with the anti-surface warfare variant having a capacity for 60 personnel and the anti-submarine variant for 70 personnel. Each ship is equipped to carry and launch a Rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB).
In terms of electronics, the primary sensor for both variants is the SR47AG for surface and air search radar. The anti-surface variant also includes a TR47C fire control radar for the main gun and an ESS-3 bow-mounted sonar for underwater detection. A combat management system (CMS) with multifunction consoles is installed in these ships. For the anti-submarine variant, additional navigational aids such as the Japanese JMA 3336 radar and Vision Master chart radar are present alongside an ESS-2B bow-mounted sonar.
The armament of the anti-surface variant consists of one 76.2 mm H/PJ-26 naval gun, four C-704 surface-to-surface missiles (SSM), dual Oerlikon 20 mm cannons for anti-aircraft defense, and EDS-25A 250 mm ASW rocket launchers. The anti-submarine variant is equipped with a 76.2 mm NG 16-1 naval gun, a CS/AN2 30 mm naval gun, and two triple 324 mm torpedo tubes for ET-52C torpedoes, demonstrating enhanced capability for underwater confrontation.
