Description
The Comandanti class is a series of patrol vessels operated by the Italian Navy, composed of four ships. These vessels are classified as Nuove Unità Minori Combattenti (NUMC) in Italian terminology. They have been specially designed with stealth features in both their hull and superstructure to reduce their radar cross-section and enhance their operational efficiency in various maritime tasks.
The design philosophy of the Comandanti class emphasizes sharing various elements with the Sirio class (Nuove Unità di Pattugliamento d'Altura, NUPA), including logistics, interoperability, combat system features, and integrated telecommunications systems. Such commonality is intended to streamline maintenance and operations within the Italian Navy's fleet.
In terms of armament, the Comandanti class vessels are notable for their employment of the Oto Melara 76/62 mm Strales/Davide gun. The Comandante Foscari specifically has been involved in testing new applications for this weapon system. Notable milestones include the implementation of a new stealth shield for the gun in October 2004 and the commencement of the “DAVIDE/DART” program trials in November 2009, which took place in La Spezia with the boarding of a prototype of the aforementioned Oto Melara gun.
The operational history of these ships prominently includes a role in the Forces Command patrol for surveillance and Coastal Defence (COMFORPAT) where they function hand in hand with the NUMA units. These vessels are stationed at their operational base located in Augusta. Their missions cover a wide spectrum of maritime security tasks such as coastal patrol, traffic control, and surveillance, particularly focusing on immigration control and interdiction. Their deployment reflects the strategic importance of maritime security in the Mediterranean region and the broader efforts of the Italian Navy to project and maintain a robust maritime presence.
