Description

The Barentshav class offshore patrol vessels are three specialized ships commissioned by the Norwegian Coast Guard for various maritime tasks. Focused on efficiency and environmental responsiveness, these vessels are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), reflecting Norway's commitment to reduce maritime emissions and reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

The primary missions for the Barentshav class vessels encompass Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol, fishery inspection, search and rescue operations, and offering tug readiness, particularly considering the spiked activity of tanker traffic off the shores of Norway. These ships are an integral part of the nation's strategy to oversee and protect its maritime domains, enforce regulations, and provide critical emergency services.

The Barentshav class vessels originated from the need to upgrade and replace older Coast Guard ships with technologically advanced and less environmentally damaging alternatives. Specifically, they succeeded the NoCGV Chieftain, Tromsø, and Stålbas, which were phased out from service between 2006 and 2007 upon the expiration of their respective lease contracts.

In terms of design, these offshore patrol vessels were built by Myklebust Verft and are based on Vik-Sandvik Design VS 794 CGV. Managed by Remøy Management for the Norwegian Coast Guard, the ships exhibit a forward-thinking design that emphasizes reduced environmental impact. The Coast Guard projects an impressive reduction in emissions, forecasting a 90% decrease in NOx fumes and a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions as compared to conventionally powered vessels of a similar class.

The class comprises three vessels, which were sequentially put into service: NoCGV Barentshav was delivered first in August 2009, followed by the Bergen arriving in late 2009 to early 2010, and the Sortland completed in 2010. Through their operational history, these ships have embarked on patrols and missions consistent with their initial mandate, thus enhancing Norway's capabilities to manage its fisheries, conduct search and rescue, and maintain vigilance over its territorial waters.

While in service to the Norwegian Coast Guard, the Barentshav class has remained within Norway's jurisdiction, operating solely under the Norwegian flag as a demonstration of the country's dedication to maritime security and environmental stewardship.
