Description

The Almirante Padilla-class frigates, also known as Type FS 1500, represent a series of four frigates in service with the Colombian Navy. Constructed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel, West Germany during the early 1980s, they were commissioned between 1983 and 1984. These frigates were the most powerful units in the Colombian Navy post the retirement of older destroyers and have experienced significant upgrades through their service life, notably with the 2012 Orion Program Upgrade. The Royal Malaysian Navy operates two similar vessels as Kasturi-class corvettes.

Regarding their design, these frigates were originally commissioned with a standard displacement of 1,600 tonnes, which was reduced to 1,500 tonnes, and a fully loaded displacement that increased over time from 1,850 to 2,100 tonnes. Initially equipped to accommodate a crew of 92, this number expanded to 94. The ships also feature fin stabilizers for improved sea-keeping.

The Almirante Padilla-class frigates are powered by a CODAD propulsion system, comprising four MTU 20V 1163 TB92 diesel engines, driving two shafts. This setup allows the frigates to reach a top speed of 27 knots with an operational range of 7,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. With regards to electronics, the frigates initially carried a Sea Tiger air search radar, a Castor IIB fire control radar, among other electronic warfare and sonar equipment, which have been subsequently upgraded with modern systems like the Smart-s Mk2 radar, TACTICOS combat system, and the MIRADOR electro-optical multi-sensor surveillance, among others.

The armament initially included eight MM 40 Exocet anti-ship missiles, an OTO Melara 76-millimetre naval gun, six 324 millimeter torpedo tubes with Whitehead A244S torpedoes, twin-mounted Breda 40 millimeter guns, and four Emerlac 30 millimeter guns, which were later removed. The ships were designed to accommodate surface-to-air missiles and eventually were equipped with the French Mistral SAM system. With the Orion Program Upgrade, the ships received OTO Melara DART ammunition and SSM-700K Hae Sung I anti-ship missiles.

The frigates have a helicopter landing platform and hangar facilities compatible with multiple helicopter models, reflecting an evolution to accommodate newer and larger aircraft such as the Bell 412. The Orion Program Upgrade further enhanced the capabilities of the frigates with the installation of new engines, electronic systems, and performance improvements for navigation and communication systems.

Operational history of the Almirante Padilla-class frigates showcases their utility in patrolling Colombia's exclusive economic zone and contributing to anti-narcotic operations within Colombian waters. They have participated in multinational naval exercises like UNITAS and PANAMAX, and have capabilities extending to supporting logistical resupply of remote military outposts. The Colombian Navy's reliance on these frigates demonstrates their strategic importance in maintaining the operational readiness and maritime security of the country.
