The Italian armed forces, known as the "Forze armate italiane," consist of several branches, each with specific responsibilities:
- Italian Army (Esercito Italiano): The Italian Army is responsible for land-based military operations, including infantry, armored units, and support units. It plays a crucial role in national defense and peacekeeping missions.
- Italian Navy (Marina Militare): The Italian Navy focuses on maritime defense and security, operating a variety of vessels, submarines, surface ships, and aircraft carriers. It is responsible for protecting Italy's extensive coastline and maritime interests in the Mediterranean.
- Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare): The Italian Air Force is responsible for aerial defense and operations. It operates fighter aircraft, transport planes, and helicopters, ensuring air superiority and national defense.
- Carabinieri: The Carabinieri is a specialized law enforcement branch with military status. They handle various policing duties and can be called upon for military support during emergencies.
