Finland's military branches:
- Finnish Army: The primary land component focused on defending Finnish territory. It consists of infantry, artillery, and armored units, among others.
- Finnish Navy: Responsible for maritime defense, this branch safeguards Finland's extensive coastline and archipelago. It includes surface combatants, patrol boats, and mine warfare vessels.
- Finnish Air Force: Tasked with ensuring air sovereignty and conducting aerial operations. It encompasses fighter aircraft, transport planes, and helicopters.
- Finnish Border Guard: While primarily focused on border security and law enforcement, it also has maritime search and rescue duties, especially in the Baltic Sea.
Finland has a history of maintaining a strong defense due to its geographical location and past conflicts. The country follows a policy of military non-alignment but cooperates with various international entities, including the European Union and NATO, on defense matters. Finland also maintains a system of universal male conscription, and women can serve on a voluntary basis. The defense strategy emphasizes total defense, involving the entire population in the event of a crisis or conflict.
