Description
The R550 Magic II is a French short-range, air-to-air missile, developed as an upgrade to the original R550 Magic. Produced by Matra, which later became part of the European defense consortium MBDA, the Magic II was introduced into service in the late 1980s.
The Magic II is an infrared-guided missile, relying on its infrared seeker to lock onto the heat signature usually emitted from an aircraft's engines. This gives it "fire-and-forget" capability, freeing the pilot to engage other targets or perform evasive actions after launch. The Magic II is commonly used for close-range engagements and is particularly designed for dogfight scenarios.
One of the key improvements in the Magic II over its predecessor is its enhanced infrared counter-countermeasures. It is equipped with a more sophisticated seeker that has better resistance to flares and other countermeasures deployed by enemy aircraft, increasing the missile's chances of successfully engaging its target.
The missile is propelled by a solid-fuel rocket motor, giving it a speed of approximately Mach 3. Its compact size and weight make it suitable for various types of aircraft, including lighter or older models that may have limitations on what they can carry. It's been integrated into a range of French aircraft such as the Mirage 2000 and the Rafale, as well as being exported for use in various other platforms.
The Magic II is considered a reliable and effective short-range air-to-air missile. It's not as advanced as some newer designs like the ASRAAM or the IRIS-T, but it has proven to be a competent weapon for close-in air combat.
