Description
The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile is a newly developed hypersonic weapon that represents a significant evolution in Russia's standoff strike capabilities. Entering limited service in 2018, the Kinzhal is launched from specially modified MiG-31K Foxhound interceptor aircraft, giving Russia a new means of threatening heavily defended adversary targets from beyond normal air defense engagement range. Reportedly, it could also be launched from Tu-22M, Su-34, and possibly Su-57.
Propelled by a two-stage missile system with a solid fuel booster and high-speed maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicle as its warhead, the Kinzhal reportedly achieves speeds over Mach 10. It has an estimated range exceeding 2000km according to official Russian sources. The hypervelocity glide vehicle is capable of maneuvering to evade defensive systems during its flight toward targets.
This combination of extremely high speed, extended range, and maneuverability is designed to defeat modern air defense systems. The Kinzhal can threaten ships, land targets, and other critical infrastructure with either conventional or nuclear warheads. Its unpredictable flight path and ability to break through anti-access/area-denial bubbles enhances Russia's non-nuclear deterrent.
By employing a depressed launch trajectory shape, the Kinzhal maintains high speed and altitude on its way to targets, making interception even more difficult. The MiG-31K launch aircraft provides the ideal high and fast launch platform for the missile. More modified jets are planned as Russia sees the Kinzhal as a very high priority program. Overall, the introduction of this air-launched hypersonic missile strengthens Russia's standoff conventional strike capabilities in a way that challenges existing defensive systems. The Kinzhal's speed and range provide flexible targeting options for Russia's air forces.
