Description
The KSVK 12.7 (Krupnokalibernaya Snayperskaya Vintovka Kovrovskaya, 'Large-Caliber Kovrov Sniper Rifle') is a 12.7mm anti-materiel rifle. Developed in the late 1990s by the Degtyarev plant in Kovrov, Russia, its purpose is counter sniping, penetrating thick walls, and engaging light armored vehicles. The rifle is based on the earlier SVN-98 12.7mm experimental rifle.
The KSVK is configured as a bullpup rifle with a bolt-operated action, and fed from a magazine. The firearm is fitted with a muzzle brake. It features a standard Russian side-mounted scope rail (dovetail) suitable for attaching a variety of day and night optics. In situations where optical sights are not used or fail, open iron sights are also available.
Several versions and related designs exist:
-
The initial SVN-98
-
The KSVK
-
The ASVK (army Kovrov large-caliber sniper rifle).
The ASVK was formally adopted by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation in June 2013 under the designation 6S8 "KORD" sniper complex. An upgraded version is known as the ASVK-M Kord-M. Vietnam produces a variant called the SBT12M1, which is based on the Russian KSVK but includes modifications to suit local conditions and is equipped with a locally produced N12 optical sight.
The KSVK 12.7 rifle has seen operational deployment in multiple conflicts, including the Second Chechen War and the Syrian Civil War. The ASVK-M Kord-M variant has been noted in use during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The rifle system is employed by several military and separatist forces including Russia (with the ASVK in various military districts and the Northern Fleet, and the improved ASVK-M Kord-M having entered service in June 2018), Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine, Syria with its armed forces, Ukraine which has acquired the ASVK-M Kord-M through capture from Russian forces during the 2022 invasion, and Vietnam with the domestically produced SBT12M1 version manufactured by Z111 and Z199 factories.
