Description
Development of a new submachine gun chambered for the 9×21mm Gyurza cartridge was launched in the mid-1990s at the request of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). A weapon was presented in 1999, developed by TsNIITochMash in Klimovsk, which received the designation SR-2 and was nicknamed "Veresk". The "Veresk" and its round were created as a compact weapon capable of engaging enemies wearing Russian class-II body armor, and soft-skinned vehicles, at distances up to 200 metres. The 9×21mm Gyurza cartridge is also used by the SR-1 "Vektor" pistol.
The SR-2 "Veresk" utilizes a gas-operated action with a rotating bolt, a design principle typically used in assault rifles, partially borrowed from the SR-3 "Vikhr" compact assault rifle.
Externally, the "Veresk" exhibits similarities to the Uzi design, and accepts 20- or 30-round magazines which are inserted into the pistol grip. Control levers in the AK style are present on both sides of the receiver, with the right lever functioning as the safety switch and the left as the fire-mode selector. The cocking handle is located on the right side and is fixed to the bolt carrier, moving during firing. The weapon features a mount for a "red dot" sight on the top of the receiver, distinct from AK-style side rails, and is equipped with an upwards-folding metal stock.
A modified version designated SR-2M features:
-
A forward pistol grip positioned under the handguard, incorporating a protrusion designed to protect the shooter's hand.
-
A stock capable of being fully folded even when a "red dot" sight is installed.
The SR-2M is currently in service. A further modernisation upgrade, the SR-2MP, includes picatinny rails mounted on each side of the handguard and is fitted with a sound suppressor.
The SR-2 "Veresk" has seen operational use in the Insurgency in the North Caucasus.
