Description

The KelTec RFB was first shown at the 2007 SHOT Show. At the 2008 SHOT Show, held from February 2 to 5, it was announced that the RFB rifle would be available to the public by the fourth quarter of 2008. Production changes as a preventive measure against potential gun control legislation delayed the shipping of the 18-inch barrel carbine variant until February 2009. The rifle first shipped to distributors in the first week of March 2009.

The RFB is a gas-operated, semi-automatic bullpup rifle manufactured by KelTec Industries. It is chambered for 7.62Γ—51mm NATO/.308 Winchester ammunition and utilizes metric FAL magazines. The rifle incorporates a short-stroke gas piston operating system and a patented forward-ejection system, using a tube over the barrel to eject spent cases forward over the handguard. Empty cases are retained in an ejection chute until the weapon is tilted, the charging handle is operated, or they are pushed out by subsequent cases, after which they drop to the left of the barrel. To mitigate the potentially inconsistent trigger pull common to bullpups, the RFB uses a floating linkage bar positioning the sear above the trigger. The weapon is designed to be fully ambidextrous and features a Picatinny rail for mounting optics and accessories. The barrel serves as the weapon's rigid spine to which components are attached. KelTec later introduced the RDB and M43, similar 5.56mm bullpup rifles, in 2014.

Kel-Tec has produced at least four versions with varying barrel lengths:

  • Carbine with an 18-inch barrel

  • Hunter variant with a 24-inch barrel

  • Target version with either a heavy profile 32-inch barrel or a 26-inch stainless steel barrel

  • RFB-C with an 18.5-inch barrel, designed to meet Canadian requirements for non-restricted rifles and exclusively for export to Canada

The Target variant includes a five-way adjustable trigger allowing for a trigger pull from 2 to 6 lbf. As of 2013, all four variants had been publicly released for sale.
