Description
The PP-90 is a 9 mm folding submachine gun developed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau in Tula, Russia. It was designed specifically for use by special units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), intended for close quarters combat, particularly in situations requiring rapid deployment under unusual circumstances.
Functionally an automatic-only weapon, the PP-90 operates via the straight blowback method and is chambered for the 9×18mm Makarov cartridge. The weapon comprises a receiver, pistol grip/magazine well, and a stock. In its stowed configuration, the pistol grip and magazine fold forward under the barrel, aligned with the bore axis, and are enclosed by the folded stock body, resulting in a compact, cuboid shape with dimensions of 270 × 90 × 32 mm, facilitating concealment. To prepare the weapon for firing, the stock is pivoted outwards, simultaneously deploying the pistol grip, magazine, trigger, and trigger guard. The weapon is then readied by disengaging the safety and cocking the bolt using a handle located at the rear of the receiver, accessed from beneath the stock.
Safety mechanisms prevent firing when the weapon is folded or the stock is not fully extended. It features a manual safety and fire selector toggle on the left side of the receiver with 'P' for safe and 'O' for automatic fire. The "safe" setting locks the bolt catch. An internal drop safety prevents accidental discharge if dropped with a loaded chamber. Ammunition is supplied from a detachable 30-round box magazine housed within the hollowed pistol grip, secured by a catch on the grip's heel. Aiming is accomplished using flip-up iron sights (notch and front post) made from sheet metal that fold flush against the receiver. The muzzle is threaded for the attachment of a sound suppressor. The submachine gun, along with accessories like spare magazines and a cleaning brush, is typically carried in a holster attachable to a belt or shoulder rig, and can also utilize a sling. The PP-90 bears a conceptual resemblance to the American Ares FMG.
Known variants include:
-
PP-92, chambered in the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge.
-
PP-90M, a version capable of selective fire.
-
PP-93, a non-folding iteration.
The PP-90 was developed for and adopted by special units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).
