Description
The PM-84 Glauberyt is a Polish submachine gun developed as a personal defense weapon. It was intended for personnel in heavy weapons platoons, reconnaissance detachments, special anti-terrorist units, and police troops, and designed to be compact, lightweight, and easily concealed. It was introduced into service with the Polish military and police as a replacement for the PM-63 RAK submachine gun.
The Glauberyt is a select-fire, straight blowback firearm that fires from a closed bolt position. It features a last shot bolt hold open and release, ambidextrous charging handles (modified in later variants), and a two-bar retractable buttstock that folds to the side. Early models used a magazine release at the heel of the pistol grip and accepted 15-round flush and 25-round extended magazines. The fire selector, located above the rear of the pistol grip, has SAFE (Z), SEMI (P), and FULL AUTO (C) modes, and locks the bolt when set to SAFE. A folding fore grip is positioned in front of the trigger guard, and an optional tactical flashlight/laser grip can be attached. Later PM-98 and PM-06 variants were designed with a thumb magazine release.
Several variants of the Glauberyt exist:
- The original PM-84, chambered in 9×18mm Makarov.
- The PM-84P, chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum (produced from 1993 onwards).
- The PM-98, which introduced design changes including a thumb magazine release, a left-side only charging handle, a more robust receiver and butt stock, an enlarged trigger guard, and compatibility with an optional light/laser foregrip.
- The PM-98S, a specialized model with an increased cyclic rate of fire of 770 rounds per minute.
- The PM-06, which features a three-position telescopic butt stock, a see-through MIL-STD-1913 top rail for optics, and a hooded front sight.
Civilian semi-automatic only models include the PM96S (based on the PM84P) and the BRS-99.
The PM-84 Glauberyt series is used by military and police forces in Poland, Indonesia, Iraq, Lithuania, and the Philippines. Approximately 50,000 PM-84P, PM-98, and PM-06 variants are utilized by the Polish Armed Forces, Military Gendarmerie, and Policja. The Indonesian police use the PM-98. Iraq purchased 6,000 PM-98s in the mid-2000s. The Lithuanian Army employs 10 PM-84P units. The Philippine police also use the PM-98 variant.
