Description
The KSVK 12.7 (Krupnokalibernaya Snayperskaya Vintovka Kovrovskaya, or Large-Caliber Kovrov Sniper Rifle) is a Russian-developed 12.7mm anti-materiel rifle designed for counter-sniping, breaching thick walls, and engaging light armored vehicles. Developed in the late 1990s at the Degtyarev plant in Kovrov, Russia, it evolved from the earlier SVN-98 12.7mm experimental rifle.
The KSVK is a bullpup configuration, bolt-action, magazine-fed rifle equipped with a muzzle device that doubles as a muzzle brake. It features a standard Russian side-mounted scope rail (dovetail) for various day and night optics, as well as iron sights for backup.
Several variants of the rifle exist:
- The original SVN-98
* The KSVK
* The ASVK (army Kovrov large-caliber sniper rifle), formally adopted by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation in June 2013 as the 6S8 "KORD" sniper complex
* The SBT12M1, a Vietnamese derivative based on the Russian KSVK, modified for local conditions and equipped with the Vietnamese-produced N12 10x magnification optical sight; it is manufactured at the Z111 and Z199 factories.
An upgraded version is known as the ASVK-M Kord-M.
The KSVK 12.7 has seen action in the Second Chechen War, the Syrian Civil War, and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The rifle is used by Russia, including units across the Southern, Eastern, and Western Military Districts and the Northern Fleet (the ASVK-M Kord-M entered service in June 2018), and by Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. It is also operated by the Syrian Armed Forces. Ukraine employs the ASVK-M Kord-M, including examples captured from Russian forces during the 2022 invasion. Vietnam utilizes the domestically manufactured SBT12M1.
