Description
The FIC Mk. 9 submachine gun was developed by Floro International Corporation (FIC), based in Tanay, Rizal Province, Philippines, as a low-cost alternative to imported submachine guns for local security forces. FIC, an ISO 9000-certified company, offered the weapon for evaluation to the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, receiving favorable initial responses.
The Mk. 9 is a blowback-operated, closed-bolt weapon chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge. A selector switch allows for semi-automatic or full-automatic fire. The upper receiver is constructed from a steel tube, with the barrel held in place by the perforated barrel jacket. The lower receiver and magazine housing are made of sheet metal, and an extended magazine well incorporates a plastic hand guard that also serves as a forward grip. The weapon utilizes Uzi submachine gun-type magazines. The folding metal buttstock is also based on the Uzi pattern, and the firing mechanism is derived from the M16 rifle. The external appearance resembles the Federal Engineering XC series carbines. Differences include the use of a standard Uzi magazine catch in the magazine well and the addition of a Picatinny rail on the upper receiver. Sights consist of fixed front sights and adjustable rear sights for windage. The cocking handle is located on the left side of the upper receiver and incorporates a dust cover.
A shortened version, the MP-9, features a skeletal wire stock and lacks a barrel jacket. Both the Mk.9 and MP-9 variants are available in semi-automatic and full-automatic configurations.
The FIC Mk. 9 is in limited use by the Philippine Marines and the Philippine Navy. Some sales of the weapon were made to the AFP's Anti-Crime Task Force and the Philippine Navy's Special Warfare Group.
