Description
The DSR-1 is a bolt-action sniper rifle developed by DSR-Precision GmbH. It was also marketed by AMP Technical Services until 2004, and was designed as a specialized sniper rifle for police sharpshooters. It has been adopted by the German counter-terrorist unit GSG 9 and other European special police units.
The rifle uses a bullpup configuration and a free-floating barrel. It features a fully adjustable rear stock and cheek piece. A holder for a spare magazine is located forward of the trigger guard for faster reloading. The DSR-1 uses a benchrest match-grade, fluted barrel that can be quickly interchanged via three screws. The bolt has six lugs which lock directly into the barrel. A ventilated aluminium handguard protects the barrel, and a muzzle brake is fitted to reduce recoil. The trigger is a two-stage unit that can be adjusted. A manual, ambidextrous three-position safety is positioned above the trigger guard. A tactical suppressor is available, designed to function with the DSR-1's calibers. It attaches to the muzzle brake using a quick release lever and, while unable to eliminate the supersonic crack of projectiles, it can conceal the origin direction of the shot.
Accuracy tests conducted by Gutman gun magazine Visier showed 5-shot groups in the 0.34 - 0.63 MOA range with factory ammunition from a bipod rest. The French gun magazine Armes & Tir also reported achieving 200 x 300 mm groups at 1,000 meters with a .338 Lapua Magnum DSR-1 using RUAG target cartridges.
Two main variants are:
-
The DSR-1 Subsonic, tuned for 7.62×51mm NATO/.308 Winchester subsonic ammunition, with a reduced barrel length of 310 mm and an 8-inch twist rate optimized for stabilizing heavy, long projectiles.
-
The DSR-50 Sniper Rifle, chambered for the .50 BMG (12.7×99mm NATO) cartridge. The DSR-50 incorporates an integrated hydraulic recoil damping system within the buttstock and an integral muzzle brake/linear compensator.
Sniper rifles in .50 BMG are often used in anti-materiel roles.
The DSR-1 system is used by the Danish Navy's Frogman Corps, Germany's GSG 9 counter-terrorist unit, Luxembourg's Unité Spéciale de la Police, elements of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Mauritius's GIPM, Spain's Grupo Especial de Operaciones (GEO) and Grup Especial d'Intervenció (GEI), the Republic of China Army in Taiwan, and the Union Defence Force of the UAE.
