Description
The Bushmaster Carbon 15 is a variant within the Bushmaster XM-15 series, a line of AR-15 style semi-automatic rifles and carbines produced by Bushmaster Firearms International, LLC. The XM-15 series encompasses several configurations tailored for various applications.
Standard XM-15 firearms feature upper and lower receivers typically forged from 7075T6 aircraft-grade aluminum. Barrels on these rifles are often heavy profile and constructed from either hard chrome-lined 4150 alloy steel or 416 stainless steel. According to Bushmaster's 2016 sales brochure, new production XM-15 models were supplied with 4150 steel barrels, generally featuring a 1 turn in 9" rifling twist rate.
The XM-15 series includes several variants alongside the Carbon 15 line.
The E2S Series features:
-
A basic model with a 16-inch carbine barrel
-
The E2S Target with longer heavy barrels up to 26 inches and A2 furniture
-
The E2S Shorty with a 16-inch barrel and compact handguard
-
The E2S Shorty AK which features a 14.5-inch barrel with a permanently attached AK-74 style muzzle brake to meet length requirements.
The E2S Dissipator variant utilizes a 16-inch barrel with a front sight block at the rifle-length position while housing the functional gas block at the carbine position under an extended handguard. The QRC Series, previously known as ORC, are optics-ready flat-top rifles without iron sights, supplied with a red-dot optic. These are chambered in 5.56x45mm and feature a melonite coated barrel with a 1:8 twist, M16 style bolt carrier group, and mil-spec buffer tube. The Patrolman Series includes "pistol" versions with barrels as short as 7 inches, free-float handguards, and no stock; select-fire versions are also available for military or law enforcement. The Bushmaster M4-Type Carbine is another variant within this series.
The XM-15 series rifles have been utilized by various state and non-state actors, including state users such as the Federal Police of Brazil, New Zealand Police, forces in Papua New Guinea, and the Polish JW GROM; and non-state users such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and the Caucasus Emirate.
