Description
The Barrett M99, or Model 99, was introduced in 1999 by the Barrett Firearms Company as a more affordable alternative to the company's other rifle models. The rifle was primarily marketed towards individuals involved in long-range competitive target shooting. In 2001, a competitive shooter utilizing the M99 established a world record by achieving a 5-shot group measuring 4.09 inches at 1,000 yards (910 meters).
The M99 features a bullpup design incorporating a pistol grip and is constructed from a 7000 series aluminum alloy extrusion. Key design elements include:
-
A match-quality trigger
-
A heat-treated steel M1913 rail for optics mounting
-
A match grade barrel
The bolt is machined from a single piece of S-7 tool steel. The rifle is designed for easy maintenance and reliability with only three moving parts: the extractor, ejector, and firing pin assembly. Assembly and disassembly are facilitated by three quick assembly pins, requiring no tools. The heavy contour barrel enhances accuracy. The .416 Barrett caliber offers increased accuracy and velocity compared to .50 BMG, contributing to greater long-range precision. The bipod is detachable, and the trigger mechanism is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. The barrel is secured within the extrusion via hydraulic pressing, providing a stable platform for mounting rifle scopes. The steel barrel and the surrounding aluminum extrusion encase the cartridge, contributing to the firearm's safety.
The Barrett M99 is available chambered in two calibers: .416 Barrett and .50 BMG. The .416 Barrett version features a 32-inch (81 cm) barrel. For the .50 BMG caliber, customers can select between a 29-inch (74 cm) or a 32-inch (81 cm) barrel length. Barrett also manufactures a QDL (Quick Detach) suppressor designed for the M99. The suppressor attaches by sliding over the muzzle brake and engaging directly into an index point. The suppressor includes an auxiliary two-port muzzle brake, which assists in reducing felt recoil during suppressed firing.
