Description
The ArmaLite AR-50 is a .50 BMG, single-shot, bolt-action anti-materiel rifle manufactured by ArmaLite. The rifle was later updated to the AR50-A1B model.
The design incorporates weight and a large, fluted muzzle brake for recoil reduction. The AR-50 is a single-shot bolt-action rifle weighing approximately 34 pounds. It features a thick, rigid barrel with 1:15 right hand rifling, designed to prevent flexing. The receiver utilizes ArmaLite's octagonal design, intended to strengthen it against flexing. The receiver is bedded to the V-shaped stock, allowing the barrel to be free-floated above the forend. The stock is a three-piece aluminum construction, featuring an extruded forend and a skeleton butt stock equipped with a removable and vertically adjustable butt plate.
The updated AR50-A1B model includes a smoother action, a more heavily reinforced muzzle brake and a bolt stop that can be depressed by hand for bolt release. The AR50-A1B is designed for long-range shooting, primarily utilizing the .50 BMG cartridge.
ArmaLite produces the rifle in multiple configurations, including:
-
the standard AR-50A1 chambered for .50 BMG,
-
the left-handed AR-50A1L also chambered for .50 BMG,
-
the AR-50-A1BNM variant with refinements for match grade .50 BMG ammunition,
-
and the AR-50-A1B-416 chambered for the .416 Barrett cartridge.
The rifle is classified as an anti-materiel type.
