Description
Initially a joint venture between Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) beginning in 2009, the Ilyushin Il-276, also known as the SVTS (Sredniy Voyenno-Transportny Samolyot, or Medium Military Transport Aircraft) and previously designated Il-214, was conceived to perform regular transport duties and deploy up to 150 paratrooper soldiers or 20 tons of cargo. The initial agreement stipulated investments of US$300 million from each company, with the intention of replacing the Indian Air Force's aging Antonov An-32 fleet. However, HAL withdrew from the project in January 2016, leaving Russia to proceed independently. By October 2017, the aircraft received the official designation Il-276, and the Russian military expressed a need for at least 55 units. The Russian Ministry of Defense officially selected the Il-276 as its new medium-sized military transport aircraft in June 2020. Rostec proposed a renewed co-development offer to India in February 2023, including potential sales and assembly within India, though disagreements over engine types persist. According to the Russian press, the Il-276 is expected to begin flight testing in 2023 and deliver the first units in 2026, with Ilyushin planning to achieve an annual production rate of 12 units by 2029.
The Ilyushin Il-276 is designed as a medium-airlift military transport aircraft with a maximum payload of 20 tonnes (44,000 lb) of military or civilian cargo and the capability to deploy up to 150 paratrooper soldiers. The cabin size is designed to be similar to the Ilyushin Il-76, but half the length. Aerodynamically, the aircraft is expected to feature top-mounted wings and a T-shaped tail. Power will be provided by two Russian-made Aviadvigatel PD-14M turbofan engines. With a maximum payload of 20 tons, the aircraft's maximum range is expected to be 2,500 kilometers (1,600 mi).
As the Ilyushin Il-276 is still under development, its operational history remains prospective. The aircraft is intended to fulfill medium-airlift military transport roles, including regular transport duties and the deployment of up to 150 paratroopers or 20 tons of cargo. The Russian Ministry of Defense has expressed a need for at least 55 units, suggesting a planned integration into the Russian Aerospace Forces upon its expected introduction around 2026.
Main Variants:
-
The primary variant is the military transport version, designed for regular transport duties and capable of deploying up to 150 paratroopers or 20 tons of cargo.
-
A civilian variant of the MTA was initially planned as a 100-seater passenger airplane, with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) as the lead partner and principal integrator.
