The Sierra Leone Air Force (SLAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the armed forces of Sierra Leone. Founded in 1961, it is one of the youngest air forces in Africa. The SLAF's primary mission is to defend Sierra Leone's airspace and provide support to ground forces during military operations. The air force initially operated with a small fleet of aircraft obtained from the United Kingdom, including the Hunting Percival Provost and the Scottish Aviation Pioneer. Over the years, the SLAF has acquired various types of aircraft from several sources, including Nigeria, Israel, Ukraine, and China. As of recent reports, the SLAF primarily operates helicopters, such as the Mi-8/17, and light aircraft, including the Short Skyvan and BN-2 Defender. The air force has been involved in peacekeeping operations, disaster relief efforts, and surveillance missions within Sierra Leone. It has also participated in joint exercises with other African nations to enhance regional cooperation and interoperability. Overall, the SLAF remains focused on maintaining air superiority, enhancing its capabilities, and protecting Sierra Leone's national interests.
