Papua New Guinea Air Wing

The Papua New Guinea Air Force (PNGAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and has a relatively short history. It was established in 1973, following the country's independence from Australia. Originally, it consisted of just a small number of aircraft, primarily from the Australian Army Aviation Corps. Over the years, the PNGAF underwent expansion and development and currently operates a limited number of aircraft and helicopters. Its main role is to provide air support to the PNGDF, as well as to support government agencies in various missions, including search and rescue operations, transportation of personnel and supplies, and aerial surveillance. The PNGAF's fleet includes a mix of fixed-wing aircraft such as the Cessna 172 and King Air, as well as helicopters like the Bell UH-1H Huey and Bell 206 JetRanger. The primary focus of the PNGAF remains on maintaining a capable and operational air force within budgetary constraints, allowing it to fulfil its roles effectively.
