Overview

The Malian Air Force (Armรฉe de l'Air du Mali) is undergoing a rapid and significant realignment of its operational capabilities and strategic partnerships. Its doctrine remains centered on supporting ground forces, a necessity given the state's protracted conflict with insurgent groups across its vast territory. Organizationally, the air force operates under a joint staff and is structured into aerial zones, bases, and squadrons. Its primary missions are close air support for army operations, reconnaissance, and transport.

A defining feature of the Malian Air Force is its recent and comprehensive modernization, marking a decisive pivot from Western to Russian and Turkish suppliers. Following the deterioration of relations with France, Mali has aggressively acquired new assets. Since 2022, Russia has delivered multiple batches of aircraft, including Sukhoi Su-25 ground-attack aircraft, Albatros L-39 jets configured for light attack, Mi-24P attack helicopters, and Mi-8 transport helicopters. These platforms provide robust, direct fire support and mobility for the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa).

In parallel, Mali has developed a significant unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capability. It has become a major regional operator of Turkish drones, acquiring a fleet of at least 17 Bayraktar TB2s. These UAVs have been used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as for conducting airstrikes against insurgent groups. The TB2s have been equipped with ASELSAN CATS electro-optical systems for day and night targeting. More recently, Mali acquired the more advanced Bayraktar Akinci high-altitude, long-endurance UCAV, indicating an intent to further enhance its standoff strike and persistent surveillance capabilities. One Akinci was reportedly lost near the Algerian border in April 2025.
