Overview
The Moldovan Air Force is a small, defensively oriented force structured primarily for airspace surveillance, limited transport, and ground support. It operates as a command within the National Army and lacks any offensive fixed-wing aviation capability. Its combat potential is centered entirely on its ground-based air defense assets.
Operational capabilities are constrained by a minimal and aging aircraft inventory, consisting of a few transport and utility aircraft alongside a small number of helicopters. Pilot training is limited and often relies on support from international partners. After inheriting approximately 31 MiG-29 fighters from the former Soviet Union, Moldova sold or decommissioned all of them, with a significant number being sold to the United States in 1997. This has left the force without tactical fighters for air-to-air or air-to-ground missions.
The country's strategic doctrine is based on constitutional neutrality and the defense of its territorial integrity. However, regional instability has prompted a strengthening of its defensive posture through cooperation with Western partners, notably through NATO's Partnership for Peace program and the European Union. This has not translated into the acquisition of new combat aircraft, but rather a focus on rectifying critical deficiencies in air surveillance and air defense.
Modernization efforts are almost exclusively focused on ground-based air surveillance and defense systems. For decades, Moldova relied on obsolete Soviet-era S-125M1 (SA-3 Goa) surface-to-air missile systems. A key development in this area is the acquisition of a French Thales Ground Master 200 (GM200) mobile radar system, delivered in December 2023, which significantly improves the air force's ability to detect and track aerial targets up to 250 kilometers away. The European Union has provided substantial funding through the European Peace Facility to support this modernization, with future aid packages intended to supply new air defense systems to replace the legacy Soviet equipment.
