Overview
The Kuwait Air Force (KAF) is a compact but well-equipped force structured to defend the nation's airspace and support ground forces, primarily within a coalition framework. Its operational doctrine is not focused on independent power projection but on integration with regional and Western partners, a strategy shaped by the 1990 invasion by Iraq. The KAF operates primarily from three main air bases: Ali Al Salem Air Base, Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base, and Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base, which also serves as Kuwait International Airport. These bases house a structure of fighter, transport, and helicopter squadrons.
The KAF’s operational capabilities are centered around air defense, air support for ground operations, and maritime strike. While historically reliant on 'legacy' F/A-18C/D Hornets, the force is undergoing a significant modernization. This involves the induction of 28 Eurofighter Typhoons and 28 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. This dual-platform approach enhances operational flexibility, combining the Typhoon's air superiority features with the Super Hornet's established multi-role and carrier-proven capabilities. The acquisition includes advanced munitions such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM, as well as Sniper targeting pods, augmenting the KAF's precision strike capacity. The legacy Hornet fleet is being phased out and sold to international partners as the new aircraft are integrated.
The strategic doctrine of the KAF prioritizes interoperability with the United States and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. This is maintained through continuous joint exercises that focus on air defense, counter-terrorism, and close air support. This defensive and coalition-centric posture is a direct lesson from the Gulf War.
In recent years, the KAF has gained valuable operational experience. Its assets have participated in the Saudi-led coalition operations in Yemen, primarily conducting air interdiction and strike missions.
