Overview
The Cyprus Air Command is the air wing of the Cypriot National Guard and is structured primarily as a rotary-wing and air defense force. Its organization is centered on the 55th Combat Group, which controls the flying squadrons based at Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos. This includes the 450th Attack Helicopter Squadron, the 460th Search and Rescue (SAR) Squadron, and the 470th Unmanned Aircraft Squadron. A secondary base exists at Lakatamia. Police aviation assets operate separately but coordinate with the military.
The force’s operational capabilities are oriented towards anti-tank warfare, a direct counter to the armored forces in the northern part of the island. This mission has been primarily executed by Mi-35P attack helicopters and SA.342L1 Gazelle anti-tank helicopters, which often operate in integrated teams. The acquisition of Israeli Aerostar unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provides a persistent surveillance and reconnaissance capability. A dedicated SAR capability is maintained by the 460th Squadron using AW139 helicopters on 24/7 alert. While Cyprus does not operate fixed-wing combat aircraft, the Paphos airbase is equipped with hardened aircraft shelters and periodically hosts Hellenic Air Force F-16s for joint exercises. Air defense is a critical component, relying on an integrated radar network and surface-to-air missile systems.
Cyprus's strategic doctrine is fundamentally shaped by the "Single Area Defence Doctrine" with Greece, established in 1993. This agreement ensures joint defense planning and a Greek commitment to treat an attack on Cyprus as a casus belli. While its full implementation has fluctuated, the doctrine provides the framework for military cooperation.
Modernization efforts are focused on replacing Russian-made legacy systems with Western equipment and enhancing interoperability with European and U.S. forces. The eleven Mi-35P helicopters are being divested, with a contract signed for six H145M light attack/reconnaissance helicopters, with an option for six more. Air defenses are being upgraded with the acquisition of the Israeli Barak MX system, slated to be fully operational by mid-2025 to replace older Russian SAMs. Cyprus also joined a European consortium in 2023 to procure over 1,000 Mistral short-range air defense missiles.
