Overview
The Royal Bahraini Air Force (RBAF) is a compact but well-equipped service structured primarily for national air defense and participation in coalition operations. Its operational framework is centered around two main installations: Shaikh Isa Air Base for its fixed-wing combat and transport aircraft, and Rifa'a Air Base for its rotary-wing assets. The force is organized into approximately ten squadrons. Interoperability with regional allies, particularly Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members and the United States, is a core component of its operational readiness, demonstrated through regular joint training exercises such as Ballast Cannon.
The RBAF's strategic doctrine is aligned with protecting the kingdom's sovereignty and contributing to regional stability alongside its GCC partners. This doctrine emphasizes maintaining a credible deterrent through air superiority and has adapted to address evolving threats, including those posed by unmanned aerial systems and terrorist organizations. RBAF leadership has articulated a focus on developing capabilities for all-domain warfare and stresses the importance of international defense partnerships to access advanced military technology.
The air force gained combat experience during the Gulf War, flying defensive and offensive sorties. More recently, the RBAF participated in the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen, deploying F-16 aircraft to operate from bases in Saudi Arabia against Houthi forces.
Acquisition of 16 new F-16 Block 70 fighters is underway, as is the concurrent upgrade of its existing F-16C/D Block 40 fleet to the F-16V standard. The Block 70 aircraft introduces advanced capabilities, including the APG-83 AESA radar, enhanced avionics based on F-35 technologies, and structural upgrades to extend service life. The helicopter fleet is also being modernized with the induction of new AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, which will enhance maritime defense capabilities. Older platforms, such as the F-5 fighters, are being retained for a lead-in fighter trainer role following minor upgrades.
